  • Nouns in the English Language

A noun is one of the elements that make up the eight parts of speech in the English language. Nouns are most often the first words learned by children who are learning to speak for the first time as well as older individuals who are learning to speak a language other than their native language. Nouns are used to label a person, place, thing, or abstract concept idea. There are a number of different types of nouns, and each type has a different usage. Though nouns can be used in a number of ways such as as an adjective, adverb, direct object, indirect object, subject, or subject complement, here we will just be discussion the various types of nouns.

Nouns are usually either singular or plural. In many cases, a plural noun is formed simply by adding the suffix "-s" or "-es" to the end of the word, but there are also several examples where this general rule is not true. The singular form "goose" is made into "geese" when referring to more than one goose, for example. Likewise, "mouse" becomes "mice". Some words are the same whether they are singular or plural. One "deer" is expressed the same as four "deer". These exceptions to the normal rule can make learning how to make plural nouns complicated, so the best way to learn is through frequent practice.

Another important rule is that some nouns are common while others are proper. Common nouns only require capitalization if they are the first word in a sentence. Proper nouns, on the other hand, must always be capitalized. Proper nouns include names of people, places, and things such as "Africa" or "William Shakespeare". Unlike some other languages, most words in the English do not come with gender distinctions. That is, most words are gender-neutral, so there is no need to change suffixes to form the male or female version of a word. There are, however, a few gender-specific nouns that are still commonly used. This is especially true when discussing various occupations. In recent years, however, there has been a shift from using gender-specific terms such as "mailman" to more neutral terms like "mail carrier".
  • Grammar Software to Help Your Children

English Grammar Software can be a very powerful tool to help school children learn the English language. If your children are struggling to learn the more intricate rules of English grammar or need more help with writing for school than you are able to provide, English grammar software could be exactly what you need.

Most modern grammar software applications are bundled with some type of teaching program to help learners more thoroughly understand the English language. Many even have actual English lessons attached which can supplement what they are learning at school. Along with this, grammar software will display detailed explanations about any grammar mistakes your child makes explaining exactly why it was an error. The instant feedback provided by the software is an invaluable leaning tool in itself since it instantly shows learners their mistakes and explains how they can be corrected.

Even after your child is proficient in using basic grammar, these types of programs can continue to help grow their knowledge of the English language since they usually check grammar down to the smallest details.

After installation your kids will have easy access to all of the grammar related help they need while completing schoolwork, and if you pay attention you'll probably learn some new grammar rules yourself.

  • Learning English as a Second Language

Learning a second language is never a particularly easy task to undertake. This is also true when one is trying to learn the English language. Learning to speak English at a basic level well enough to be able to communicate is not incredibly difficult, but it becomes much, much more difficult when you are trying to learn to learn more than just how to communicate at a basic level. Much if the difficulty arises from the numerous rules found in the English language. Once one learns these rules, however, it is possible for most anyone to learn to speak English fluently as a second language.

The rules of the English language are the most important, and often the most difficult, aspect to master. The problem when the rules, however, is that unlike many other languages, there are almost always exceptions. That is, there are almost no rules that are true one hundred percent of the time. This can make the language more difficult to learn, but it also creates more flexibility within the English language. Another aspect that is followed inconsistently is pronunciation. The way words are pronounced in the English language can vary greatly, even in neighboring regions. The rules regarding the certain letters are pronounced are not consistent, so really, the only way to learn how to properly pronounce words is through frequent practice and plenty of diligence. It can also be very difficult to learn and understand correct sentence structure, vocabulary usage, and grammar. Many people who are learning English as a second language also struggle when determining when to use proper English and when to use colloquial English, especially because many people do so incorrectly.

English truly is a fun and interesting language. Knowing how to speak it fluently can help individuals communicate in a variety of locations and situations all around the world. Because there is so much flexibility within the language, it can be easy to learn how to speak it well enough to be understood, but this flexibility can also make it very difficult to become entirely fluent. It is, however, possible to learn the language. Doing so just requires plenty of hard work, diligence, and a lot of practice.
